York College is pleased to announce that Dr. Josephine Schamp will join the division of science and mathematics this fall as an assistant professor of chemistry. Schamp comes to York from the University of Iowa where she has been doing postdoctoral research since 2017 in psychiatry and neurology.

Schamp completed her doctoral studies in Medicinal & Natural Products Chemistry at the University of Iowa in 2017. Her thesis was titled Toxic Dopamine Metabolites, Oxidative Stress, and Antioxidants as Contributors to Neurodegeneration, Specifically Parkinson’s Disease. She also completed a MS at the University in translational biomedicine in 2019.

"I am looking forward to joining the York College community where I hope to bring an excitement for chemistry to campus through classroom learning as well as laboratory/research experiences, but most importantly using these opportunities to help equip students with the skills necessary for successful careers in STEM fields," said Schamp.

York College recently announced a 3+1 nursing partnership with Creighton University that will begin this fall. Students now have a pathway to complete a nursing degree in four years—three years as a YC student followed by a 12-month accelerated nursing program on the CHI Health St. Francis campus in Grand Island. The addition of Dr. Schamp further strengthens the York College science degrees.

“Dr. Schamp is passionate about chemistry and has a heart for students,” said Dr. Shane Mountjoy, YC Provost. “She brings expertise and depth to our science department and campus, and we are excited about the vision she has for including students in research as a means of teaching and learning.”

Schamp did her undergraduate work at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kans., earning a BS in biology and chemistry in 2011. In addition to graduating summa cum laude, Schamp was a multi-year recipient of the NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athlete Award in volleyball as well as track and field while at Bethany.

"Since my time at a small Christian college I have recognized how this unique foundation motivates me as a scientist through exploration of how science and religion can naturally be integrated,” added Schamp. “Contributing to the Christ-centered education offered at York College is a wonderful opportunity. I recognize how creating a compassionate and supportive environment can help us challenge students both academically as scientists while being able to engage them in spiritual development, transforming students into biblical scholars of science."
