Suggested Items to Bring

Students are encouraged to decorate their rooms in a manner that helps them feel at home and comfortable in a new environment, with the underlying expectation that decorations will respect themselves and others, and not deface their room or apartment in any way. Below is a list of suggested items for students to bring, as well as things that should be avoided. Please contact contact the Director of Residence Life and Housing at (402) 363-5718 with any questions.

Please Bring...

  • Alarm clock
  • Bedding - Sheets, pillow, pillowcases, mattress pad, blankets
  • Bible
  • Bicycle and bicycle lock
  • Cooking supplies - Can opener, utensils, plate, bowl, glass, plastic containers with lids for food storage
  • Checks, credit/debit cards
  • Cleaning supplies for your room or apartment - All-purpose cleaner, paper towels, sponge, dish soap, trash bags, dustpan, mop, vacuum cleaner, room deodorizer, etc. (York University cleans public areas only.)
  • Cold weather clothing - include a heavy coat and boots
  • Electric fan, lamp, light bulbs
  • Headphones/Airpods for quiet hours
  • Laundry supplies - laundry basket, detergent, dryer sheets, spot remover, dirty clothes bag, ironing board, mending kit, safety pins, money for washing and drying machines, folding drying rack, hangers
  • Medical supplies - bandages, ointment, thermometer, prescriptions, insurance ID card
  • Microwave and/or small refrigerator - arrange to share with roommate, if desired. Only one microwave per apartment; no personal refrigerators in apartments.
  • Room decorations - carpet or area rug, appropriate posters, pictures, tension rod curtains, shower curtain and rod to cover closet. Shower curtains are also needed for showers in apartments, Eckman suites, and Thomas basement suites. 
  • Shower caddy with soap, shampoo, razor, deodorant, toothbrush, etc. 
  • Sleeping bag - for retreats and travel
  • Towels
  • Trash can & liners

Please DO NOT Bring...

  • Items that pose safety hazards, such as: candles, incense, matches, lighters or lighter fluid, fireworks, weapons, firearms or ammunition, unshielded halogen bulbs, open element appliances such as: space heaters, toaster ovens and hot plates, etc. 
  • Pets: Fish may be allowed if properly cared for and arrangements are made for them during times when the residence halls are closed. 
  • Items prohibited at York University, such as: Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, or items advertising either of these, highway signs, sexually exploitative posters or materials, etc.
  • Carpet tape, nails, screws, any wall fasteners, extension cords, power strips (unless equipped with breaker), window air conditioning units.
  • Clothing that is not in keeping with the dress code such as: Short shorts, spandex shorts and tights, biking shorts, low-cut dresses, mini-skirts, bare midriffs, clothing with suggestive languages/pictures or clothing that advertises alcohol, drug, or tobacco products.
  • Personal wireless routers are not permitted.
  • Command strips and/or adhesive hanging items.
