Today I had lunch with a couple graduating seniors in the cafeteria. Not planned, just sat down at their table. One was a transfer, the other came as a freshman. They talked about their time at YC. They really have nothing in common except friendship. They met each other through activities and events on campus and eventually became close. The transfer talked about friends she had before, who she now sees as acquaintances because she never experienced the depths of lifelong friendships that she gained here. I was reminded of recent posts I read on Facebook of alumni sharing moments that led them to friendships here. One of the young ladies lost her father a year ago. She talked about the YC friendships that sustained her through that time. LaRee and I went to her Dad's funeral. We didn't mix much because we didn't know most of the people or family in attendance. But the girl said something that I will never forget. She said several asked her if she was going to go back to college and she really wasn't sure, she was so devastated by the loss. She said, when she saw us at the funeral, she knew she belonged back at York. I had no idea until today.
It sometimes scares me at how many times little things we say or do (or don't do) affect someone's life. If you work at a Christian college this happens more than you know. May God help us to always be the person that someone needs when they need them. Whether we know it or not. Go Panthers.
