LaRee and I moved to an old farmhouse we have been remodeling for three years close to Hampton, NE., about 15 miles from campus. After three years of remodeling, we finally moved out there in February and we love it. LaRee calls it our home in the Hamptons. One of the reasons we were interested in it, besides the beauty and the quiet, was the fact that it had several acres. Last night we shattered the "quiet" part of the night when we took a deep breath and invited the student government and orientation leaders to bring all the new students out to "our place." The cafeteria provided shrimp and sausage boil. Orientation leaders engaged them in ice breaker games for almost two hours. We ended with a devotional by Jarrell Cunningham, student body president. What a great bunch of new students! Some neighbors came over and commented on how polite and engaging the students were. I am sure other neighbors were wondering about the wild party over at the Eckman place that lasted until 10 pm. At least no one called the sheriff.
The last event was musical chairs. I was wondering how they would carry that off, since no one brought a speaker system. They had a great plan I would never have thought of: Returning students formed a choir and the music for musical chairs was them singing the school song. What a great start to a great year. I can't wait to see what the year brings and how these students will continue the success story that God is blessing York College with. Go Panthers!
