Mermaids and mollusks, pirates, sailors, and Lost Boys will fill the Bartholomew Performing Arts Center this spring as the York College Theatre Department presents Peter and the Starcatcher.

Starcatcher is a prequel to J.M. Barrie’s original Peter Pan works. While Pan adaptations abound, Director John Baker says this production is “The story that sets up all of the other Pan stories.”

“The story is fresh. You may know these characters, but you don’t know this story,” said Baker.

Baker first saw this show on Broadway in 2013. “It’s playful. It’s creative. It’s one of the funniest shows you’ll ever see,” he said. “I knew I had to direct it.” This is the first time the Tony Award winning show will be performed in York.

The family friendly play features the writing of American comedian Dave Barry and British children’s adventure writer Ridley Pearson, adapted for stage by Rick Elice. While it is a children’s story, Baker stresses that it is a show that will delight both young and old. “This production will provide an incredible evening of enjoyment and entertainment for our audiences,” said Baker.

Peter and the Starcatcher will run March 2-5. Tickets may be reserved at www.york.edu/boxoffice or by calling (402) 363-5641.
