Levitt Library opened its doors to York College students on November 5, 1969, becoming a focal point to learning on campus. That day, students formed a line and moved books one stack at a time from McGehee Library to the new building. In case you haven’t already done the math, this happened in the freshman year of President Steve Eckman ‘71 and his wife LaRee (Scroggin) ‘71. During Tuesday’s fun, students enjoyed some of ‘69s enduring treats - Funyuns, Orville Redenbacher popcorn, TicTacs, Blow-pop suckers, and CapriSun drinks. Also highlighted throughout the day were some of the top songs of the year: Sugar Sugar, Dizzy, Can't Get Next to You, Hooked on a Feeling, and still a favorite today, Sweet Caroline. Movie posters and throw-back photos of some of YC’s favorites decorated the walls and the laughs from students playing Twister were just loud enough to muffle the sounds of renovations taking place below. (Find more photos here.) Progress has been made since the summer! The entryway was finished and ready to go for the start of the semester, making the ARC at Levitt more inviting than ever. The lower level now has more walls, forming the testing center and staff workroom, as well as carpet in the open space and tile in the bathrooms. As predicted, with the new view and furniture, the second level space has become a popular destination for students. (Find more photos here.)
