Moseley recognized by York College

York College honored Steve Moseley, associate editor of the York News-Times, with the Good Neighbor award Tuesday in chapel. This award is presented to community members who have been important partners in the success of York College and its students.

YC President Steve Eckman presented Moseley with a plaque and thanked him for his efforts on behalf of school and community. “Steve has gone out of his way to provide coverage and interest in York College...Steve’s interest has help us to maintain our profile and interest in the community,” said Eckman. “During Steve's 12 years at the York News-Times, he has been an integral partner in promoting the college, from attending campus events at all hours to ensuring coverage of our news. Our positive relationship with the community depends on partners like Steve and specifically the efforts he has put forth over the last 12 years.”

After receiving the award, Moseley responded in kind. “I know with certainty that our community and the lives of every person who inhabits it, in ways great and small, is enhanced by the cultural, social, ethnic diversity, the academic, fine arts, athletic, and Christian influences that this college brings to York. Precious few towns this size enjoy such an asset as York College. Please know we are completely aware of how fortunate York is to be among the chosen. Thank you for this award and for all that you do--administration, faculty, and students alike--every single day. Our little town on the prairie is made better by your presence.”

Past recipients of the Good Neighbor award are Scott Koch, retired public school administrator, and Lonnie Berger, owner of Wendy’s in York.

Moseley and his wife Norma, both natives of Genoa, Nebraska, raised their three children in Lexington. There, in 1991 at age 40, he took a most unlikely leap of faith from grocery store ownership to community news at the Tri-City Tribune in nearby Cozad, where he remained the next 10 years.

Once all three children were through college and established in their own lives, Steve and Norma relocated to Powell, Wyoming, just outside the east gate of Yellowstone National Park. They explored the surrounding mountains constantly the next six years as Steve pursued wildlife and nature photos while working as lead photographer and sports editor for the twice-weekly Powell Tribune.

The birth of a grandson in Lincoln and the likelihood of more grandkids to come there and also in Kearney (there are now four) brought the Moseleys back to Nebraska. The choice of York was not a coincidence given its location on I-80, nearly equal distance from both Lincoln and Kearney.

Moseley came to the York News-Times as managing editor and photographer in August 2005. He wore those hats and was also second chair on a two-man sports staff through 2014. At that time he handed the managing editor reins to Melanie Wilkinson, took a step back from sports and assumed the role of associate editor. From then until now he has concentrated on people features, special section content and photography. At the end of this month both he and his wife will semi-retire to part-time status.
