Ruth Carlock, director of York College’s Levitt Library, will retire this spring after
30 years of service.
Carlock began working in the library in 1972, while her husband Lowell was a student. She left in 1976 to pivot her career into teaching until 1993 when she returned to the library. She served for a time as secretary to Charles Baucom, and then moved into an acquisitions and cataloguing role. In 2000, she was promoted to library coordinator during an interim between directors. She was named assistant director in 2001 and director in 2012. “Ruth Carlock is one of those employees who shows up and consistently does their job, day in and day out,” Provost Shane Mountjoy said. “Her servant heart and gentle spirit will be missed by students and faculty.”

A dedicated librarian, Carlock earned a master’s of library science degree in 2005.
She has published several articles in the Nebraska Library Association Quarterly and
in 2014 she was recognized by the NLA College and University Section with a distinguished
service award. She was also one of seven librarians to collaborate on The RDA workbook: Learning the Basics of Resource Description and Access, which was published in 2014.
In addition to her work at York College, Carlock has taught online cataloging courses for several years through Central Community College, and this past year served as an adjunct faculty member for Summit Christian College.
Carlock has been recognized several times for her work and service, including YC Employee of the Month (1995), Second Miler Award (2001), Dale R. Larson Teacher of Achievement (2015), and Who’s Who honors (multiple years). She was also presented with a Friend of the York College Drama Department recognition in 2017, as she has volunteered her time and talents for many years in making costumes for the Traveling Children’s Theatre.
All four of Carlock’s children attended York College. In her retirement, Carlock plans to spend time with her children and grandchildren, primarily dividing her time between York and Millard, Nebraska.
