![]() Olena Kozlova-Pates ‘97 is a long way from her home geographically, but her thoughts are never far from Ukraine. Her country has been wracked with war since the 2014 Russian invasion of Crimea. In the intervening years, more than 10,000 of her fellow Ukrainians have been killed in the conflict that rages in Southern and Eastern Ukraine. Two million Ukrainians have become internally displaced refugees, fleeing the areas where the fighting is fiercest. Kozlova-Pates, who now lives in North Carolina, was shocked by the violence in her homeland--and dismayed by the lack of response from the rest of the world. “In the middle of Europe, in Europe's largest country, there is this war that is happening right now with so many casualties and so many refugees, and you don't see very much about it in the American or European media,” she said. ![]() The mechanical whirring of a drone and the whinny of a horse were some of the unusual sounds heard at York College on Thursday, as more than 150 FFA students from across the state flooded campus for the third annual Cultivate Event. Next month these students will begin competing in FFA events such as ag demonstration, parliamentary procedure, and agriculture literacy. At the York College hosted event, they had the opportunity to practice their presentations and hone their skills with feedback from college students and faculty members. These student-directed plays will take place in Gurganus Hall in the Scene Shop Theatre (10th & Kiplinger). The first show of the evening is Cut, a comedy directed by junior theatre major Ryan Harrison. Cut is the story of a play within a play, within a play, within a play! Things get very confusing as the cast of the plays forget who they are and who they are supposed to be. Harrison is a junior theatre major from Bozeman, Montana. ![]() York College has been included in several recent online rankings with recognition for the outstanding value the college offers, as well as specific program excellence. Using this metric, York College was ranked number six out of 33 colleges and universities in Nebraska. ![]() Morgan Goracke ’14 has been a part of the performing arts scene at York College since 2011, first as a student on the theatre stage, then as an active alumni volunteer in many backstage activities, from makeup to box office to technical assistance. This week Goracke will begin a new role in the department as York College’s first performing arts recruiter and Bartholomew Performing Arts Center facility manager. Goracke, who has worked for the past two years as a campaign assistant in the York College Advancement Office, is excited to put her theatre communication degree to use in this new capacity. "The arts at York College are what allowed me to develop into the person I am,” she said. “I am thrilled to join this team, and help others discover what a difference it will make for their lives." ![]() More than 200 high school students from the region converged on York College’s campus for the second annual Cultivate One-Act Festival, hosted on Saturday, November 4.
