Registration is now open for a free workshop at York College that will teach attendees how to run better meetings and get more done through use of parliamentary procedure. The Beyond the Gavel workshop features professional development sessions for those who participate in competitive parliamentary procedure (such as FFA, FCCLA and FBLA students) as well as those who want to hone their meeting leadership skills for their business, church, or civic organization. There is no cost to attend any of the sessions, but attendees must register by contacting event coordinator Stacie Turnbull at smturnbull@york.edu or 402-363-5678.

York College concluded the most successful campaign in its history on June 30. During the campaign, the college raised $16.8 million for scholarships, campus improvements, and programs, eclipsing the campaign’s original goal of $10.7 million. These gifts have made an impact on the student experience at York College, from ensuring access through scholarships, to improving and expanding academic offerings, to upgrading the physical campus. The campaign began in the college’s 125th year. As the 128th year begins this fall, the future of York College has never been more secure.

Great American Eclipse

7/6/2017

Picture
A celestial spectacle is coming to York, Nebraska. On the afternoon of Monday, August 21, York will be plunged into darkness for more than 2 minutes as the moon passes between the earth and the sun and the sun’s light is blocked in a total eclipse. The shadow of the moon will fall in a thin, 70 mile-strip moving South East across the U.S., from Oregon to South Carolina. The closer you are to the centerline of that shadow, the longer the totality of the eclipse will last, up to 2 minutes and 40 seconds. York is a scant 14 miles from the center line, so the totality will last 2 minutes and 19 seconds on campus. The partial eclipse will begin at 11:35 a.m. and will reach totality at 1 p.m.

The last total solar eclipse to be viewed from York, Nebraska, was in 1194. York will not see another such event until 2744. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.

York College is not hosting an eclipse viewing event for the general public, however, if alumni and friends would like to join us on the field on the center of campus, they are welcome to do so. Bring some sunscreen, lawn chair, and special eclipse viewing glasses and enjoy the show. Due to the fact that students will be returning for the fall semester at that time, there will not be any space available for guests who wish to spend the night on campus. Book your hotel rooms as soon as possible if you are planning to stay overnight. Our region is expecting a high volume of eclipse watchers, so it may be difficult to find accommodations closer to the event. For more information, see www.york.edu/eclipse.

Equipping Leaders, Shaping the World

7/3/2017

The noise of children laughing, splashing, singing, playing and praying is music to the ears of Paul Biles, executive director of Tejas Camp and Retreat Center. Biles oversees operations for the Christian facility, which serves approximately 6,000 children each summer and a total of 31,000 people throughout the year.

“My role is coaching directors in our ministry, from facilities to discipleship to volunteers, to get them the tools they need to help their staff be successful,” said Biles, who manages 25 full-time and 15 part-time employees, plus 70 seasonal employees and a bevy of volunteers.

Recent York College graduate Zanoria Echols ’16 was one of 63 educators selected as a 2017 Woodrow Wilson Georgia Teaching Fellow. The highly competitive program recruits those with strong backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, and math—the STEM fields—and prepares them to teach in high-need secondary schools.

Each Fellow receives $30,000 to complete a specially designed, cutting-edge master’s degree program based on a yearlong classroom experience. In return, Fellows commit to teach for three years in the urban and rural Georgia schools that most need strong STEM teachers. Throughout the three-year commitment, Fellows receive ongoing support and mentoring.
