Liberal Arts Core Curriculum

Coursework for each bachelor's degree at York College includes core requirements that challenge students in six broad areas of inquiry. For specific requirements of each major, refer to the catalog page link for each program. Current general requirements include: 

Core Level Courses (11 hours)

  • BIB 121, History of the New Testament: Life of Christ and Acts
  • COM 113, Basic Speech
  • ENG 113, English Composition I
  • ENG 123, English Composition II  

Artistic expression & critical appreciation 

(6 hours, 3 of which must be literature*)​
  • ART 203, Art Appreciation
  • MUS 203, Music Appreciation           
  • COM 240, Film Appreciation           
  • ENG 273, World Literature* 

Cultural perspectives        

(3 hours)​
  • GEO 214, Cultural Geography            
  • Spanish (at YC or transferred)           
  • HST 273, World Civilization to 1450          
  • HST 283, World Civilization since 1450   

Historical Foundation 

(6 hours; choose two courses)           ​
  • HST 213, History of the U.S. to 1877           
  • HST 223, History of the U.S. since 1877           
  • HST 253, Western Civilization to 1648           
  • HST 263, Western Civilization since 1648  

Human behavior and social foundations   

(3 hours) ​
  • PSY 113, General Psychology           
  • PSY 143, Human Growth and Development 

​Religious studies     

(6 hours; each course is 2 hours)​
  • BIB 123, History of the Old Testament           
  • BIB 212, History of the New Testament, Romans to Revelation            
  • BIB 223/PHI 223, Philosophy of Living        

​Scientific Inquiry 

(6 hours; one course must be Math*)            ​
  • NSC 153, Physical Science or NSC 163, Biological Science       
  • MTH 145, Math in the Real World* (or higher level math)   

​Institutional Requirements 

(5-7 hours)​
  • YCS 101 "Freshman Seminar" (one hour)           
  • 2 upper-division Bible courses (300 or 400 level courses in BIB, DOC, MIN, or RHS)
