York College students from the class of 1942 banded together funding the construction of the pillars. The lone sentries flanked the sidewalk that lead past the library (now McGehee Hall) into the west entrance of Old Main (campus building destroyed in 1951 by tragic fire).
In 1971, men of the Kyodai social club spearheaded a fundraising drive to add a sign to the two brick columns. The heavy aluminum letters "York College" were largely paid for by a donation from the Magnuson family of Tulsa, Okla. Club members involved in the project were Ken Alley, Allen Keller, Ken Whaley, Tom Everidge and Mike Woodruff.
In the early 1980's, globe lights were added to the archway to accompany the globe lights added across campus.
After eight decades of memories, the archway has become one of the most iconic and photographed spots on campus.
It has also been the backdrop of many momentous occasions. Most prospective students, graduates, alumni have snapped a photo under the archway.

In 2022, the brick pillars are showing their age. The time has come to restore the pillars and renewal of the metal lettering. The work will include refurbishing the lettering, adding a cap to the top of each pillar, replacing bricks where needed, shoring up the foundation and tuckpointing the entire structure.
At the same time, our campus is preparing to make the jump to York University and the time is right to add a second set of pillars with new lettering in a new location. It cannot replace the old entryway, but for the sake of the new students arriving this fall, it is a much needed addition.
The restoration is $20,000 project. Your gift today can help preserve the arch and have it looking great for that next campus-visit photo. Your gift of $25, $50, or $100 now will provide a much needed facelift. Would you ensure that you participate and give?
