LaRee and I moved to an old farmhouse we have been remodeling for three years close to Hampton, NE., about 15 miles from campus. After three years of remodeling, we finally moved out there in February and we love it. LaRee calls it our home in the Hamptons.
One of the reasons we were interested in it, besides the beauty and the quiet, was the fact that it had several acres. Last night we shattered the "quiet" part of the night when we took a deep breath and invited the student government and orientation leaders to bring all the new students out to "our place." The cafeteria provided shrimp and sausage boil. Orientation leaders engaged them in ice breaker games for almost two hours. We ended with a devotional by Jarrell Cunningham, student body president.

A bit later father approached me in the parking lot of the dorm where his daughter was moving in and wanted to talk about his daughter's choice to come to York College. He said, "do your remember your discussion with my daughter when she visited." I admitted I did not and I apologized. If I am in town I visit with most of the students who visit campus and it is hard to separate those discussions. He replied, "not the visit in your office. But you showed up at her tryout and talked to her on the sideline" I vaguely remembered the situation. He said, " you told her, 'I know you have lots of interest and offers right now, but no one will love you more than we will.'" He said she made the decision then that YC was where she wanted to be.
Moleskin is a wonderful thing. If you aren't aware of it, it provides a protective cover for wounds, blisters or "hot spots," especially on your feet. We currently have about 75 athletes on campus for preseason workouts ahead of school starting this weekend. It is exciting to see them interact, grow together as a team, and start to experience the York College culture.
As they go through the workouts, many of them are not used to three practices a day and start to rub blisters on their feet. We went and got moleskin for them yesterday and showed them how to use it to protect their sore spots. |
