Registration is now open for a free workshop at York College that will teach attendees how to run better meetings and get more done through use of parliamentary procedure. The Beyond the Gavel workshop features professional development sessions for those who participate in competitive parliamentary procedure (such as FFA, FCCLA and FBLA students) as well as those who want to hone their meeting leadership skills for their business, church, or civic organization. There is no cost to attend any of the sessions, but attendees must register by contacting event coordinator Stacie Turnbull at or 402-363-5678.

Beyond the Gavel will be held on the York College campus, August 10 and 11. Day one will have programming for FFA students from 9:30 to 5:30 p.m. and for community and business members from 7-9 p.m. The business and community members’ session will focus on skills needed for running efficient meetings, rather than competitive parliamentary procedure. The following day will include tracks for students and advisors of FFA, Skills USA, FCCLA, and FBLA groups.
The evening session for community members should be of particular interest to anyone involved in a leadership role, said Turnbull. “We’ve all sat through meetings that were longer than necessary or more complicated than necessary.  If you are involved in a community organization, church board or business leadership, you should attend.  It’s about making meetings more efficient – and therefore making our organizations more efficient.”
The workshop will feature parliamentary procedure experts Dr. Daniel Foster and Sandy Olson. Foster is an associate professor in agricultural teacher education at Penn State University. He is also a registered parliamentarian through the National Association of Parliamentarians, a professional accredited parliamentarian with the Society of Agricultural Education Parliamentarians, and the National FFA Organization Parliamentary Procedure LDE superintendent. Sandy Olson is a professional registered parliamentarian with the National Association of Parliamentarians and a national parliamentary judge for FCCLA, FBLA, and Skills USA.
This event is sponsored by York College, Cornerstone Bank, Henderson State Bank, and the York County Visitors Bureau.
