The York College English Department will host its annual Writer’s Workshop on Sunday,
April 2. The workshop will feature Dr. Karen Gettert Shoemaker presenting “Family
Stories into Literature: The Role of Gossip and Research in Fiction.” This event will
be open to the public and is free of charge; however, registration is required. Register at www.york.edu/writersworkshop.
The event will begin with a lecture from Dr. Shoemaker at 2 p.m. in the Prayer Chapel at York College. A reception will follow at 3 p.m. in the Cornerstone Room of the Mackey Center. The workshop component will run from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., also in the Cornerstone Room. Attendees are encouraged to come prepared to write.

Shoemaker is a writer, teacher, and entrepreneur living in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her
novel, The Meaning of Names (Red Hen Press 2014), was chosen as Nebraska’s reading choice for the 2016 One Book
One Nebraska statewide reading program. Her first collection of short fiction, Night Sounds and Other Stories, was published in 2002.
She has received numerous awards for her writing and her teaching, including two Independent Artist Fellowships from the Nebraska Arts Council and a Nebraska Book Award for Best Short Fiction. Her story, “Playing Horses,” was chosen by the editors of Best American Short Stories as one of the 100 Distinguished Stories of 2001. She has taught literature and writing at the University of Nebraska, both Lincoln and Omaha campuses, and has conducted writing workshops through the Nebraska Humanities Council. She received her Ph.D. in Creative Writing from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in 1997. She and her husband own and operate Shoemaker’s Truck Stop and Travel Center in Lincoln. The York College Writer’s Workshop has hosted seven speakers and hundreds of guests since its inception in 2013. Topics have ranged from poetry, to history, to documentary film writing, to Christian fiction. Presenters have given tips on the craft of writing as well as the process of publication. It is a useful event for professional as well as amateur writers.
