Special gift recalls York College history

York College has announced a special challenge gift that will impact scholarships for students starting in the fall 2018 semester.

The $62,000 Challenge will offer a 1-to-1 match for all gifts to York College up to that amount through the end of the fiscal year (June 30). Gifts during this period will go to support scholarships for worthy students, from athletes to artists to high achieving academics.

The anonymous group of donors includes seven alumni and friends with a desire to come alongside students seeking Christian education.

The amount of the challenge gift is significant as the fall 2018 semester marks 62 years since York College reopened after two years of closure due to a devastating fire. “At that time, York College was given a second life of service,” said Brent Magner, vice president for advancement. “It’s a wonderful quirk that when we totaled the amount of the challenge gifts that came in, it was $62,000--a number that reflects the continuing work of transformation that goes on in this place. If it wasn’t for donors and friends that worked to reopen the school in 1956, we would not have the legacy of Christ-centered education since 1890 we are so proud of today.”

If you would like to participate in this matching gift opportunity, you can make a gift in three ways:
  • Online: Make a gift securely via our website at www.york.edu/give (or below). Select “$62,000 Challenge” from the drop down designation list.
  • Mail: You can mail a gift to York College (1125 E 8th St, York, NE 68467) and write “Match Gift” on the memo line.
  • Phone: Call the York College Advancement Office at (402)363-5657 during business hours to make a gift by phone.

“We are so thankful for those that gave generously to reopen the school in 1956, those that are making this $62,000 challenge gift today, and all of those who will respond to their challenge with gifts over the next 12 weeks,” said Magner. “Donors such as these are securing the future of York College for students for generations to come.”
