Thadd Varmall named First Team All-American

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2012-13 Division II Men's Basketball All-America teams, and for the second year in a row, York College's Thaddeus Varmall is among the honored players.

Varmall, a 6'3" senior guard from Dallas, Tex., was one of ten players to make NAIA First-Team All-American after being an Honorable Mention All-American last season. Varmall, who led the team in scoring, averaging 20/gm and in rebounds with 8/gm, was also chosen the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Varmall transferred into the York College program his sophomore year from Collin County Community College in Dallas. In his three-year career with YC, he scored a total of 1,344 points and had 607 rebounds. He is only the second Panther to earn NAIA First-Team All-American honors; Alain Laroche (2004), was the first.

The 2012-13 season celebrated York's first regular season championship as the Panthers shared the MCAC title with Bellevue University. After securing an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championship under head coach Delton Deal, also a first for the program, the Panthers won their first game in overtime 78-77, against 9th ranked Davenport University.

In the second round game with Midland University, York again took the game into overtime but was eliminated from the tournament in a 76-71 nail-biter. Varmall was the high scorer for the Panthers in both games with 19 and 26 points respectively. The Panthers finished 24-9 on the season. 

Varmall is the third Panther in the 2012-13 academic year to be named an NAIA All-American. He joins Jason Arreola (wrestling) and Shaylee Carlock (track & field) in representing York College with the prestigious honor.
