York College Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee Hub Foster Remembered
York College joins with the community of York today in recognizing Hub Foster, a longtime York resident and ardent supporter of YC athletics. Foster passed away this morning at the age of 95. He had battled cancer for several years.
For decades, Hub was the voice of the York College Panthers.
In 2012 he was recognized for his instrumental role in the college’s history when he was inducted into the York College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Hub Foster began his association with York College athletics in the 1950s, easily making him one of the longest running supporters of the athletic department.
Foster says that when York College closed in 1954, he recognized it as a major blow to the community. He recalls telling his wife, “If the college ever reopens, I want to do something to help them out.”
In 1956 the college did reopen and soon after, Foster started showing up at athletic events. He kept score at basketball games, brought his own speaker system and volunteered his vocal talents as an announcer for baseball, and he gave York College ample coverage in his newspaper’s sports pages.
Foster was a vital link between the college and community.
For 42 years as a sports writer for the York News-Times, Foster was the unofficial voice of the Panthers. He traveled with the teams and attended home games, delivering the play-by-play and crafting post-game write-ups. He spent countless hours over the years in the YC gymnasium at the scorekeeper’s table and in the press box at Levitt Stadium, rallying support for the Panthers.
He was more than simply the voice and the pen of the Panthers, though. Colis Campbell, longtime coach of the YC men’s basketball team, as well as players on the team described Foster as a good friend and a good man.
In 2011, Foster was also inducted into the York High School Hall of Fame. In 2012, he was awarded a Lifetime Golf Membership at the York Country Club.
Foster's late wife, Ruth, served as his support system and he credits her with helping him to accomplish all he did in his lifetime. Foster states, “Behind every man is a good woman, and I had a good woman.” He credits her with being “my partner and most ardent supporter.” Hub and Ruth were married for 67 ½ years before her death.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, March 11, 2013, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York. Interment will follow the service at York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.metzmortuary.com.
