All-American HonorsTwo athletes named NAIA All-American over the weekend
It was a couple of proud moments for York College Athletics over the weekend as two All-Americans were honored on Saturday. Jason Arreola, a junior from Anaheim, Calif., went 3-2 in the NAIA National Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, earning him 4th place in the 133lb weight class. Also earning All-American status was Shaylee Carlock at the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio. The senior from Turney, Mo. threw 14.25m in the shot and placed 4th. Five athletes represented York’s wrestling program at nationals garnering 22 points for the Panthers and helping York College finishing 18th out of the 34 teams in attendance. Oscar Marin (125: 2-2), Jason Arreola (133: 3-2), Nicholas Clarke (149: 1-2), Brad Carls (197: 2-2), and Saia Lotulelei (Heavy Wt: 0-2). Arreola is only the second wrestler in York’s history to be named All-American. Associate Head Coach Greg Smith earned the program’s first All-American honor in 2006 when he finished 5th at nationals. Arreola was perfect for Friday’s matches as he won 12-4 over Miguel Baltazar from Southern Oregon Univ., and then won a 7-5 decision over Jacob McCombs of Lindsey Wilson. On Saturday, he fell 2-3 to Cameron Neiss of MSU – Northern, and then had a rematch with Baltazar, winning 10-3. In the final match he lost 3-10 to Angel Garcia of Menlo College for his fourth place finish. On the season, Arreola was 16-6. While Carlock is familiar with impressive honors at the National Christian College Athletics Association level, a three-time NCCAA All-American in the shot put, she had yet to prove herself at the NAIA national competition. Ranked #14 in the nation and coming off a 3rd place finish at the NCCAA National Championships two weeks prior, Carlock knew she was in the hunt for a top ten position in the shot. And she saved her best for last as on her sixth and final attempt she threw her personal best of 14.25 meters (49 feet 6 inches) to take fourth. She is YC's first track and field athlete to be named All-American. Carlock’s teammate, Andrew Aragon, a senior from Delta, Colo., also competed at nationals in the shot but did not qualify for the finals with his prelim attempts. Congratulations to Jason and Shaylee for their success and for representing York College Athletics on the national stage. |
