Track and Field completes season at nationals
Each race in track and field begins with a bang and the YC track season ended in a bang as well. In just the 2nd year back, the York College track and field program was represented well at NCCAA Nationals in Joliet, Illinois.
The meet started with Mary-Beth Ester in the 400 meters running an amazing race seating her 3rd after preliminaries and ended with Shaylee Carlock earning a 4th place finish overall in the shot put. After struggling for the last few weeks with injuries the team had to make a tough decision on Saturday concerning Ester in the finals of the 400. Injuries had finally taken their toll and she had to injury default out of the 400 finals with the desire to become an All-American next year in the event. Although Carlock was the top finisher for the Panthers, all of the athletes did well and showed improvement under coach Justin Carver who took over mid-year when Derek Kite left to become head coach at LCU.
"We ended the season with a bang and the desire to only become stronger and faster over the summer," said Carver. With a solid core already in place and very talented recruits coming in next year in both cross country and track and field, Carver's anxious to see what's next for this team.
Athletic director Jared Stark said, "This team represents the Lord in everything they do and I am very pleased to see the development of Carver as head coach. He's been a great influence on this campus for many years and will be for many more to come."
