An Honor Well Deserved
Standerfer Named NAIA Honorable Mention All-American
by Paula Clendaniel
Standerfer’s talents mirror the time and effort he puts into the gym. Every good athlete knows that what you do when the cameras are not on is what really counts. Coach Delton Deal has his team pouring their heart and soul into every practice. Standerfer was no exception. Even in the off season, the men’s basketball team was hard at work. Coach Deal had this to say about Standerfer, “Corey is living proof that great character and great work ethic leads to success. He deserves everything he gets and is the perfect example of hard work and dedication.”
Off the court, Standerfer’s personality is nothing like his game. On campus he is just an average student; laidback with a sense of humor, but when its time to play basketball, it’s no more fun and games. His desire is not to be rewarded for his efforts, but instead to know that he has been successful. I asked Corey what this recognition meant to him. “It’s really humbling, having coaches tell me before that I would never play college ball and I would never be good enough,” Standerfer says. “It just feels like my accomplishments are validated now.”
Standerfer’s presence didn’t just make an impact on the basketball court, but it has also influenced his teammates. “He always had something positive and encouraging to say when I needed it most,” says teammate Desmond Strickland. “I have really looked up to him since we started playing together and since us underclassmen were unable to provide our seniors with a championship, the next best thing was for him to receive this award and it was well deserved.”
In addition to being named Honorable Mention All-American by these two organizations Corey Standerfer also was a two time 1st Team all conference in his two seasons at York College, and was named first team All Region by the NCCAA.
