Panthers vs. Cancer
YC Community Assists Family of Current Student
A double-header at the Freeman Center on the York College campus Friday night was one of the thousands of stages for a nationwide event: Coaches vs. Cancer. York College renamed the evening Panthers vs. Cancer and focused on financial assistance for the family of current York College students whosesix-year old brother is battling cancer. York College played host to Central Christian College in a key conference match up made more important by the evening's festivities to increase cancer awareness.
Coaches on both sides wore suits with tennis shoes and many in the audience joined them as YC students, faculty and staff also donned suits and sneakers. The evening’s highlight was a special center-court prayer for those fighting cancer and a presentation to Madge Miller, whose husband Mabrey battled cancer late in his life. Mabrey served York College for more than 50 years.
In the first game of the double-header, the York College women were victorious by a score of 65-48. Junior transfer Juju Bassetto led the Lady Panthers with 15 points, doing most of her damage in the paint. In the second game the men’s team was edged by Central Christian 98-83 in a match up that was closer than the final score indicated
