YC Students Stepping Up With Haiti Relief
by Sue Roush
The Community of York is invited to join with the campus community each Thursday evening in the York College Prayer Chapel to join in a time of prayer for Haiti. “Prayers for Haiti” will begin this Thursday, January 29th, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and will continue each Thursday evening until February 25th.
YC Students are also hosting a benefit concert by guitarist Caleb Hawley, a former York College student and graduate of Berklee College of Music. The concert will be held Wednesday, February 10 on the York College campus. Hawley, a resident of New York City, is currently on a 13 state tour.
Dr. Mark Pearson, Biology professor and medical doctor has already left for Haiti to aid the relief efforts. Dr. Pearson and Dr. Bob Whittaker left as soon as Haiti opened their borders to provide medical help. “It is good to have someone on the ground in Haiti to make sure the money and supplies raised by our students go directly to helping the Haitian people,” stated Steve Eckman, President of York College. “Residents of York are working with our students to raise additional funds to go directly to the relief efforts. The local Rotary club has already committed $1,000 and our local hospital gave anesthetic and other medical supplies to Dr. Pearson to take with him to Port-Au-Prince.”
The York College Concert Choir is donating the proceeds from CD sales and general donations from their annual community concert to be held this Sunday night, January 31st at 6:00 pm at the East Hill Church of Christ.
Other college and community sponsored events are being planned in the coming weeks. “It is our hope that this will be an ongoing effort,” said Tim Lewis, “the people of Haiti will be suffering for a long time. We don’t want to forget.”
All funds raised by York College students will go directly to relief efforts through either Dr. Pearson or one of the other relief agencies identified by the Christian Chronicle. If you wish to help in this effort, donations can be made directly to York College. Make sure and put “Haiti” on the memo line of the check.
