Sea to Sea Tour Makes Campus Stop
They left from Seattle, Washington on June 30th and are scheduled to arrive in Jersey City at Liberty State Park on Aug. 30th. More than 200 cyclists on a quest to make a difference in the fight against world poverty.
On the afternoon of Friday, August 1, they started arriving on the YC campus to camp for the night. Together with several trucks packing their gear, mobile kitchen, repair shop, and various other support staff, they pitched their tents and rested from the near triple digit temperatures of their daylong trek.
It's credited as the largest cross-continental bike tour ever with 218 cyclists registered; 127 of whom are going the full distance. The largest known previous tour was 96 cyclists crossing Canada in 2005 (165 total cyclists involved). The ages of the riders range from 18 to 80 years old with about a 2:1 male to female ratio.
Collectively, they are cycling to Increase awareness concerning the root causes of global poverty and to raise money to fund initiatives aimed at reducing poverty. Each cyclists’ fund-raising target is $10,000 (or $4,000 for one leg of the route).
The tour will be a total of 62 days, 54 of those are riding days, and will cover 3,881 miles. To see more about the tour, visit the group's website at
