Youth Tutor & Mentor
Would you like to make a difference for youth? Join us in tutoring and mentoring the children and teens of North Central Washington State. Use your unique talents or interests, sharpen your leadership skills, and challenge yourself to be a significant person in their lives. Serve alongside other diverse, dedicated, and adventurous individuals from across the country. Organization Description:
Intermountain AmeriCorps is a part of a national service movement striving to rebuild communities while broadening educational and life skills opportunities for citizens. AmeriCorps offers opportunities for Americans to make a substantial commitment to serve their country, mobilizing at the local level to build a national movement for positive change.
Intermountain AmeriCorps has served rural school districts and community agencies in North Central Washington state since 1993. AmeriCorps Members strive to meet the needs of youth and expand coordination between school districts, community members, and other social service and community agencies.
Intermountain AmeriCorps operates three different projects: the Service and Education Team, Reading Corps, and VISTA. Each project has its own special focus, but all work together to seek creative ways to improve student learning and help communities meet the needs of students and families.
Position Description:
September 1st, 2008 through July 15th, 2009
45 different full-time AmeriCorps positions at: K-12 schools; alternative high schools; preschools; and community agencies such as the YWCA, Domestic and Sexual Violence Crisis Center, Literacy Council, and homeless shelters.
Choose from the following focuses:
~Tutor elementary school students in reading and ESL skills
~Recruit volunteers and organize literacy activities for youth
~Tutor and mentor youth and adults in general academic areas
~Develop programs and after-school activities
Benefits:
~Education award of $4,725
~$925 per month living allowance
~Loan forbearance on federal student loans

Qualifications:
Interest in personal and professional growth; positive interpersonal skills; organizational & time management skills; dependability; flexibility; desire to work with youth in a rural environment.
