These are the three emphasis to be a York College Men’s Basketball player. First and foremost is the understanding between being a student first and an athlete second. Coach Linnell has always put this emphasis first. Second emphasis is community service. Every York College Men’s Basketball player will take part in 8-10 community service projects a year. These projects consists of, but not limited to, working the Nebraska Husker Football Games, Benson Farms “The Worlds Largest Cornmaze”, York Area Chamber of Commerce, serving food to the homeless, mentoring at-risk youth, and helping with the Habitat for Humanity. Developing servant leaders within the community is extremely important to Coach Linnell. Finally, the third emphasis is competing at a higher level.Coach Linnell has challenged his student-athletes with these three emphasis from the beginning of his coaching career. Coach Linnell believes winning is an every day effort to improve themselves, others around them, and their community. This has been a winning combination for Coach Linnell’s entire coaching career. Coach Linnell has had the experience playing and working for some of the greatest coaches. Coach Linnell played his High School Basketball at Exeter Union high School in Exeter, California under Head Coach John Delong. Upon graduation from Exeter Union High School, Coach Linnell was recruited to play college basketball at Hastings College from 1995-1999. He played for legendary Coach Mike Trader and lettered all four years at Hastings College. Coach Linnell had the opportunity to play with some of the most talented teams in the school’s history, all while earning his degree and learning the game from his coach, Mike Trader. After graduation at Hastings College, Coach Linnell was hired as the Sport, Fitness, and Recreation Director/Head Boys Basketball Coach at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Omaha (B.G.C.O.). B.G.C.O., is a partner with the Omaha Public School system. Coach Linnell had the opportunity to teach and coach many of the youth in Omaha, but also teach and coach some of the best talent in the Omaha Metro area. In May 2004 Coach Linnell became the Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach at St. Ambrose University (SAU) in Davenport, Iowa. He coached under another legend of the game, Ray Shovlain. Coach Linnell was able to experience coaching against the best competition in the country and experience championships at SAU. The York College Panther Men’s Basketball program is getting ready for another difficult 2007-2008 campaign. The schedule consists of playing 8 games against the top teared schools out of the Great Plain Athletic Conference. It also includes 4 games out of the state of Nebraska, including the NAIA National Runner up, Mayville State University. The Panthers will also play 3 NCAA Division II schools here in the state of Nebraska; the University of Nebraska Kearney, University of Nebraska Omaha, and Wayne State University. All of these NCAA schools are picked very highly in their respective conferences. Coach Linnell believes in scheduling the toughest opponents as possible to ready his teams for conference play. Coach Linnell’s teams have competed against many NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II institutions. In addition to coaching and leading the York College Men’s Basketball program, Coach Linnell’s position at York College also allows him to fulfill one of his other passions, which is teaching classes. Coach Linnell teaches leadership classes for York College. Coach Linnell and his wife Megan have been married for six years. Megan works in the Development Department for Epworth Village in York.
