Tatum Begins with Wins

First-year coach opens with weekend victories

Over the weekend York College hosted for the second year in a row the Cornerstone Classic.  The Classic brings in 4 teams from the region to compete in a sort of round-robin where each team gets 2 games.  On the docket were York College, Peru State, Kansas Wesleyan and nearby Concordia University.

In York College's first game of the weekend they faced Concordia University and led by a wide-margin for the majority of the game.  Though Concordia, a very tough team, fought back to pull the game within 3 in the second half the Panthers were able to pull away thanks to some clutch 3 point shooting by Australian senior, Darren Best.  The Panthers ended up winning 90-75 in a game that saw almost every eligible Panther on the floor.

In the second game of the class for York College, they did play every eligible player against Kansas Wesleyan.  Kansas Wesleyan, fresh off a victory the previous day against Peru State fought tooth and nail to stay with the Panthers stifling defense and various offensive weapons.  In the end, the Panthers were again the victor 80-72.

Coach Tatum had this to say about the weekend's games, "We showed great effort.  I was happy that both nights we were able to play as a "senior" team even though we played many freshmen.  We played with the lead for almost the entirety of both games, and its tough to never give up the lead."

There were so many great performances on the floor that it would be tough to single out any players, but suffice it to say that York basketball had a great weekend and the coaching staff intends to build on the positives and just keep getting better.
