JV Sports

Each of York College’s athletic teams exist to fulfill the mission of York College which is to transform lives through Christ-centered education and to equip students for lifelong service to God, family, and society.

In addition to sponsoring 14 different varsity athletic teams York College also provides Junior Varsity teams for athletes from all over the country to extend their playing careers.  York College currently offers JV programs in the following sports: Baseball, Men’s Basketball, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Volleyball.

Junior Varsity and Varsity teams do differ somewhat in purpose and function.  It is the athletic department’s desire that participants understand and a good fit can be made between them and the school.

Purposes of Junior Varsity competition
1. Increase Participation
It is the desire of JV programs to offer more students the opportunity to compete in varsity athletics than might normally be possible.   A JV program extends invitations to compete collegiately based on a variety of factors in addition to athletic ability.  Although, playing time will be more available to student-athletes in JV programs those decisions are at the discretion of the coaching staff and will always involve student-athletes meeting expectations on and off the field of competition.  Junior Varsity competition gives athletes who need a little more development the ability to refine technical skill while still seeing court time, instead of sitting on the sidelines.

2. Skill Development
Coaches and players alike have the desire to see an athlete’s skill development.  In order for that to take place coaches must make and communicate their honest assessment of a player’s ability.  Development is an attainable goal for every student-athlete, despite their starting point.  On every JV teams, as on every varsity team there will be a differing range of athletic ability.  Not every JV athlete will move up to varsity competition and not every athlete will want to move up to JV competition.

3. Reciprocate Varsity Programs
On occasion some JV players will move up to varsity competition.  The decision on a move to varsity exists with the varsity sport coach and should be communicated with the athlete.   Varsity and JV programs may scrimmage or practice together on occasion in order to give both teams a chance to improve and see a specific level of competition.

4. Campus Involvement
While York College encourages every student to be involved in extra-curricular activities in addition to their sport; JV programs will provide more time and opportunity for those activities.  The time demands between varsity and JV will not be identical because our expectations for those programs are not identical.  JV players will get the full benefit of team camaraderie and participating in a sport they love, while not having the time constraints or academic hindrances that a varsity schedule can cause.

What can I expect as a member of a Junior Varsity Program?

Team Opportunity
Programs may practice separately but there are other elements that go into a team.  Teams may do activities such as study hall, weight-training, off-season work-outs, social events together and may receive the same team accessories in some programs.

Scholarship
Our JV programs are scholarship opportunities where players can receive institutional aid to help pay for their education.   Scholarships, campus discipline and athletic eligibility for JV competition is the exact same set of standards as varsity competition.

Opportunity to compete
Every JV athlete will have an opportunity to represent York College on the field of play; how much playing time depends on many factors and should be communicated directly by the coaching staff.

Experience
being a collegiate athlete is a transformative experience, being a part of a team and sharing a common vision is an experience not seen in many other environments.  Going on road-trips, sharing team goals and interaction with coaches and teammates at practice, competitions and other team activities are a truly special opportunity.

Athletic  Growth
Not every athlete will move up, but it is the goal of every JV program for every athlete to improve at their given sport.

Campus Involvement
More campus involvement is a key component of JV programs therefore these teams will not compete as hefty a schedule as varsity competition.  They will have a suitable schedule which features both competitions home and away against other local JV programs and community colleges.

Coach and Volunteer Involvement
It is important to note that all of our Head JV coaches are also assistants for the Varsity teams.  Because of this it is necessary to include other staff and even volunteers to buttress our coaching staffs.  Each Head JV coach will have a clearly defined role and be responsible for the assistants and volunteers that work with their programs.  The expectations for assistants and volunteers will be the same as our varsity head coaches.

Campus Acknowledgement
Athletic competitions, results, rosters and other pertinent information will be available via the York College website.  Competitions and results will be announced in chapel and teams will be recognized for their representation of York College.
