York College fans may not have been able to be at the game in person, but they were sure there in spirit, watching the nail biter live-streamed at the Campbell Activity Center. The crowd went wild when the buzzer sounded at the end of overtime with the Panthers victorious over Davenport University 78-77. This was York's first appearance at nationals.
York received an at-large bid to the tournament, whereas the Davenport Panthers (27-6) out of Grand Rapids, Mich., were ranked #9 in the NAIA. York gave up a 16-point lead early in the second half to a resurrected offense on the part of Davenport, forcing the game into overtime. After a seesaw battle throughout the five-minute overtime period, York put the ball in the hands of senior guard Thadd Varmall, who drove down the right side of the lane and put York up by one with 13 seconds to go. Davenport missed their first shot attempt but got the offensive rebound. Their second shot with 6 seconds on the clock was blocked out of bounds by York’s Heyvis Jackson. With 4 seconds left in the game, Davenport had one more opportunity to go up by one, but their shot fell short on the front of the rim and York took possession of the ball as the buzzer sounded.
York had four scorers in double figures with Varmall, MCAC Player of the Year, leading the charge with 19. Jackson had 16, Dylan Brewer contributed 15, and Marcus Johnson added 14.York shot 42% from the field and was 4 of 19 from beyond the arc. Davenport fared about the same shooting 44% on the morning and only 6 of 25 on 3-pt attempts. Jackson led all players with 15 rebounds.
The Panthers are now 24-8 on the season. Coach Delton Deal's squad will take on #25 Midland University out of Fremont, Neb., Friday at 8:30 a.m. at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.). Midland, a member of the GPAC, defeated #8 Eastern Oregon University 77-53 in the second game of the tournament.
