Chelsi Reichwaldt, a senior education major from Lincoln, Neb., was recently elected by her peers to serve as the western representative in the executive committee of the Student Education Association of Nebraska (SEAN).
She will serve during the 2013-14 academic year, acting as a liaison between SEAN, the Nebraska Educators Association, and the students in the western region of the state (four colleges, including YC).
Reichwaldt says she is thankful for this opportunity to serve, as it is a chance for networking and professional growth. As part of the executive committee, she will attend a national workshop for educators this summer in Atlanta. Part of her time there will be spent working with other students to improve an elementary school through the Outreach to Teach program. Participants will paint, clean, sort books, move desks, and otherwise improve the school grounds, making it a more inviting place to learn.
Reichwaldt says she and classmates from YC as well as other SEAN members will do the same to a school in Nebraska sometime in October.
As a member of the executive committee, Reichwaldt will be responsible for tracking and reporting activities of SEAN chapters at York College, Chadron State College, University of Nebraska Kearney, and Hastings College.
Reichwaldt is a middle grades math and special education major. She says that SEAN has been helpful to her as she develops as a teacher and leader, especially when it comes to classroom management. It’s also a lot of fun, she says.
