There’s more to life than soccer.
That’s the message York College Head Men’s Soccer Coach Jon Ireland wants his players to understand. While most college athletes spend the week before classes begin giving their all during grueling three-a-day practices, Ireland set some time aside for his team to give back.
Fifteen members of the team volunteered earlier this week at Living Water Rescue Mission, a resource for those in need of food, shelter, or guidance. The soccer team spent time painting at the facility in York.
“We’ve been so focused on soccer, with two-a-days and three-a-days. I wanted to get the team thinking about something else, thinking about someone besides themselves. I wanted them to focus on serving others and building the community,” says Ireland.
“The guys had a lot of fun.” Ireland says the team will return to Living Water to volunteer again this week to help with cleaning.
Ireland plans for service to be a regular activity for his team throughout the year. “I want the guys to know that there are a lot of things out there that are more important that soccer, like helping people and making a difference in the community.”
