Despite losing the opening game 7-12 to Central Baptist Friday night, the York College Panthers refused to quit and took the final three games of the weekend series 10-0, 9-5, and 5-1.
In the 10-0 victory, Aaron Conyers, junior left handed pitcher from Cameron Park, Calif., took the wind out of the Mustangs' sails as he went the distance throwing a 7-inning no-hitter. He struck out 12 in the win and faced the minimum number of batters—the only hitter to reach base advanced to first on an error, but was later thrown out in a double play. Conyers was not only named Pitcher of the Week by the conference but also earned NAIA PItcher of the Week, the second Panther in as many years to have that distinct honor. Conyers owns six complete games this season en route to a 7-2 record and 2.73 earned run average. He leads the squad with 66 innings pitched and 67 strikeouts.
With the loss, the Bellevue University Bruins will host the MCAC Tournament, this week in Omaha. York is seated as the #2 team in the conference and will play Oklahoma Wesleyan on Friday, May 3rd with the opening pitch at noon in the single elimination tournament.*
The NAIA poll released last week had YC baseball at No. 10, the highest ranking achieved by a Panther program since the move to a four-year college in 1993. With the four-game series with Central Baptist, the Panthers finish the regular season at 39-10 and 19-3 in conference play and are currently ranked #11 in the nation by the NAIA Coaches Poll.
*Due to the recent snowstorm in the Omaha area, the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament, hosted by Bellevue University, has been changed to a single-elimination tournament on Friday, May 3. The tournament will now be played at both theCreighton University Sports Complex and Westgate Field. York College and Oklahoma Wesleyan University will play at the CU Sports Complex while Bellevue and Central Baptist College will battle at Westgate Field.
